About this deal

After seeing some incredible photos across the web, and after getting some encouragement from new colleagues, I expended my Christmas money on a piece of glass that cost more than my camera body itself. They started with the super fun PEN EP-1, then EP-2, then E-P3 and when they released the OM-D E-M5 they changed the M4/3 game more than Panasonic has ever done. I find this 150mm focal length to be absolutely ideal for shooting photographs of my young nieces and nephews while they play in the living room. Capable of delivering an attention-grabbing shallow depth of field when shooting portraits, and attractively defocused surroundings, the M. You don’t have to like what I say or agree with it but know these are facts that come out of testing and using the cameras.

But after a couple months even that felt big so I bought the X100 Black Edition and freaking love it. The lens has been built with the Micro Four Thirds cameras in mind and features a smart design to live up to the beautiful, retro-styled O-MD and PEN series as well. The only time I wish I had a full frame was on a recent trip to Yosemite and could not get El Cap fully in the frame with the reflection of it in the river.

I still think this photo is one of the best I’ve ever shot and I chalk it up to the Olympus 75mm f/1. A further look at the specs shows why this is – Olympus decided not to include any ASPH elements and added a 9 blade aperture, which helps in bokeh rendering. I’ll be missing the range between 90mm and 200mm which i like when I’m shooting my Canon 70-200mm 2. While I have the trinity of Pro zoom lenses for use, I save those for my landscape and event shooting. My wife’s sister lives about eight hours away and we get to see her sister’s family three or four times a year.

We tested this lens with the Olympus PEN E-PL5, and found that it balanced pretty well on that camera, even if the combination was a bit front heavy. Without a doubt, this 75mm lens and its fast autofocus system saved my sister’s engagement photos that day. It takes longer to take on and off than your usual hood, but it feels very retro, and adds to the charm.

It can be too long, but, actually get used to using it for street photography in certain situations. I think it fits both E-M1 and GX7 well, as both cameras have Image Stabilization, you will need the IS for 150mm focal length equivalent! The OM-D does EVERYTHING any DSLR can do besides extreme shallow DOF effects – and of course using specialized tilt shift lenses, which very few do these days. I was using F8 for this shot and still did not get enough depth of field to see the whole fruit in focus.

One question about the Gariz case if I can, I see the tripod mount on the side of the body, in what must be the Gariz own metal base. But, I mean,I’d rather pick up a larger and heavier lens that I know I’d use vs a small and lightweight lens that will barely get any use, right? I have a few instances today that I needed to shoot my subjects without them knowing I was aiming the camera at them. This lens can snap to a target lightning quick and this has helped me take spot-on photos with not a moment to spare.
