About this deal

was the first of Olympus's PRO series of lenses, designed as fast aperture zooms for the working professional, built to offer the quality and withstand the beatings such users expected. Now, Olympus has shown that it can make a lens with the optical quality as well as build quality that these users demand, and professional photographers such as photojournalists and adventure photographers should take note.

On the other hand it can be of advantage if you wear the cam by strap on your shoulder, because by pointing down to the ground, it’s kept safely aligned to your body. Pro, Olympus employed a seven circular-bladed diaphragm, which produces some very nice bokeh, at least in our opinion. Generally I’d have the Pany 25mm on my Olympus Em5 mkii body, and my Oly 12-50mm on my hip for when I need it If I could mash these two lenses together, I’d probably have a lens that can live on my camera 90% of the time quite happily, a lens I could go on holiday for a week with a lens that means I can just take my camera and nothing else. If you pixel peep, you'll find that it's a tad softer in the corners when zoomed past 25mm, but that's about it. This high-resolution, large-aperture zoom offers incredible versatility from wide-angle to mid-range telephoto shots. There were limits to all of these cameras (it’s not a bad thing btw) but with the 12-40mm, it’s like I can shoot anything that comes my way! Color rendition is fine to me – maybe a little bit too neutral and without significant character (compared to my Panaleica 25mm/f1. The camera-lens combo is capable of locking focus on a subject almost instantly, even when alternating between close and faraway subjects.

When I review lenses, I usually go and say something along the lines of “Modern lenses are good enough, nothing to see here, let’s move on”. The lens is also splash and dust proof which makes it the perfect companion for the OM-D E-M1 or OM-D E-M5 in rough conditions. The only plastic element is the inner part of the lens that sticks out when increasing the focal length. This week away is a prime example- I have brought extra stuff out of a force of habit, but the extra lens, the dust blower and loads of my extras lived either in my bag or AirBNB and didn’t see the light of day.Pairing with a dustproof, splashproof, and freezeproof camera body makes it possible to continue shooting in punishing environments such as rain, snow, and dusty environments with peace of mind. For sure there is no more stealth factor, as the lens is pretty big, and there are no lens markings for hyperfocal focusing or zone focusing, but there are a few advantages.

This lens will help you capture stunning close-up shots of insects, leaves and flowers and other small objects. The latest manufacturing techniques suppress surface scattering on aspherical lenses, significantly reducing flares compared to conventional products, resulting in clearer optical performance. The Panasonic seems a little more “balanced” between it’s wide and telephoto ends in terms of sharpness.

Apart from the zoom being slightly uneven in tension, the lens behaves faultlessly and is a good choice for a general-purpose optic. is wide enough for pretty much all the photos I want to take, from portraits to shallow DOF ‘mini landscapes’. Olympus has a history of making really great glass, especially with its older, larger Four Thirds system. primes, so pulling the focus ring back towards the camera engages manual focus mode and reveals a distance scale.
