About this deal

Even her in-laws who know that the marriage only exists because Amos raped her, still accuse her to be a witch who wants to kill her own son. I liked the Lagosian vernacular in the story throughout, it felt like I was witnessing a narrative between people in real life. Femi is not the only male character who is dubious, there is the male protagonist in ‘Just the Tip’ who cheats on his partner with her best friend just because she wouldn’t have sex with him outside the confines of marriage.

This book is full of realistic, flesh and blood characters, crass descriptions and understandable motives. Women in different chapters had to deal with objectification, oversexualization, condemnation, rape, second guessing of themselves.

Kuku's writing style is delightfully irreverent, and he fearlessly tackles taboo subjects with a touch of satire. What is also remarkable about the book is that the stories are not told solely from a female perspective. Could not for the life of me push through this book, way too many sex scenes that are completely unnecessary, random and forced. From the exaggerated machismo of Lagosian men to the absurdity of social media influencers, nothing escapes Kuku's hilarious scrutiny. The polygamous inclinations of African men are deeply explored in this book, as is their propensity to find logic in double-standards.

Honestly, the collection wasn't as diverse as I wanted it to be- but then again, the title told us exactly what to expect. The gaslighting and painting of Caroline as the one with the fault just goes ahead to fall in line with the norm in the novel. It starts with a dedication that reads: “To you, and all devoted people inundated by the all-too-familiar phrase ‘Men are scum’. This is collection of short stories, some of which were funny, some were not so funny, and a couple of sad ones in between.

Even the story featuring gay men follows the same pattern: man and woman fall in 'like' and enter what the woman thinks is a monogamous relationship. When the sexual content was repetitive (which can make you cringe at some point due to the raw descriptions), I asked myself if all what most men care about is their physical desires. Her debut collection of stories, Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad, became a runaway bestseller in Africa upon its release in 2021, and was named the bestselling fiction title of 2022 in Nigeria, with international editions following in the UK (Swift Press), US (HarperVia) and Germany (Peter Hammer Verlag).I finish all my books because when it comes to books I am optimistic, it may surprise me or end up being good ,there's always light at the end of a tunnel but this book, My very first DNF crushed that hope. As a woman of African origin, I've heard all these crazy stories about men betraying the women they claim to love and respect. Out of all the stories my favorite may be the Beard Gang or Sidelined only because of the craziness of the whole thing. The thrills and suspense, especially the cliff hanger endings of some of the stories had me putting the book away every now and then just so I can chew on what I just read. My favourites were International relations, A Lovers Vendetta, Side Lined, Independence Day and Beard Gang - something about its crudeness, factuality and engagement was hooking.
