About this deal

From “Taxman” to “Tomorrow Never Knows,” The Beatles’ REVOLVER has been newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and Sam Okell, and sourced directly from the original four-track master tapes with audio brought forth in stunning clarity with the help of cutting-edge technology developed by the award-winning sound team at Peter Jackson’s WingNut Films Productions Ltd.

For me, ‘Revolver’ is the Beatles’ best album,” says John Sebastian of the Lovin’ Spoonful, who later learned that his song “ Daydream” had inspired the album’s feel-good side-two opener, “Good Day Sunshine. It is refreshing to hear a different generational perspective of how this musician became a Beatles fan. This new stereo mix is quite remarkable in many ways, especially when you take a step back and think about what they’ve accomplished here. The 1999 Yellow Submarine Songtrack remix of “Love You To” was a tremendous improvement over the original, but the 2022 remix boasts even better clarity and separation of the instruments, immersive percussion, and is a far superior listening experience. I'm baffled as to why UMe/Apple decided to go with GZ for this box, as all the discs are noisy even after wet/vac cleanings, have tight spindle holes, and are slightly warped. Revolver is the sound of them striving and laying the groundwork for even more ambitious music to come.

And being knowledgeable in that area I found that the 2009 remix of Revolver was a lot more of Paul’s bass lines in Taxman . Instruments were often crowded to one speaker while vocals and the occasional stray tambourine were lumped together on the other.

But, for the first time since their global breakthrough, the Beatles took a break in early 1966, canceling a proposed film and taking four months off before heading into the studio. All the new Revolver releases feature the album's new stereo mix, sourced directly from the original 4-track master tapes. I’ve always thought the electric rhythm guitar in the song was a little too gruff, a little too gritty, a little too sandpapery for such a gentle, stately song. There are a couple of reasons for this – for one, The Beatles were pushing the boundaries of the technology available to them. However, those of us who were totally knocked out by the precise detailing of The Beatles In Mono box (with its reproduction of the very different folded-over tab-type construction of the original UK Beatles records) might have to reset one’s expectations a bit, as these are more standard, modern constructs.

Few that followed would combine supernal songwriting, bleeding edge experimentation, outstanding musicianship, and musical eclecticism to the phenomenal degree this album did. The biggest thing I was worried about from the use of this new technology was in regards to any anomalies and artifacts left behind on the music, and I’m happy there are not any obvious ones to report. So, the other big news about this new Revolver box set is the inclusion of two LPs’ worth of studio outtakes. Revolver’s sweeping new Special Edition follows the universally acclaimed remixed and expanded Special Editions of Sgt.

All in all, this remix is the improvement that this masterpiece of an album has been waiting for all these years. A fun novelty song, maybe, and meets the contractual obligation of giving Ringo a song (which is why, in part, Hard Day’s Night is the Fabs’ true masterpiece — no Ringo vocal! S. fans by shaving a few songs off of every Beatles album for release on an later “extra” album that would net them more sales.
