There were not so very many of these afternoons, for Tony’s holidays were drawing to a close, but as they followed each other, day by day, in an unbroken spell of sunny weather, they seemed to form one long, continuous and luminous avenue of pale green leaves and glancing golden light, leading always, at the end, to the grey big house with the great dark cedar by its side, and Mr Barlow’s welcoming smile within.

This book has a new Preface by Victor de Waal (Elisabeth’s son) and an Afterword by Peter Stansky: both concentrate on the author’s life and the circumstances by which her novel manuscripts ended up in a US archive, and don’t give much discussion of the text, but both areas are highly interesting. Both the foreword and afterword explain some of the history of both author and book and that both of Elisabeth de Waal's work could have been lost which would have been such a shame as this is a gentle story of thwarted love and opportunity. Built in 1504 by Prior Thomas Docwra, St John’s Gate was the south gateway to the Priory of Clerkenwell, the headquarters of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. Two disparate but kindred souls, Mr Barlow and Anita, meet and find solace in each other through their love of Milton Place. But, alas, ‘body’ is what publishers were looking for in the 1960s, and this is one of the reasons why Milton Place never found a publisher during Elisabeth’s lifetime.
