About this deal

I purchased this controller for my Sky-Watcher 127 Mak, together with an AstroZap heated dew shield (for 127mm dia scopes), as my Mak's front corrector plate seems like a "dew magnet" (I guess it happens with everyone). Great battery life, reliable connectivity, durable build quality, trigger stops, grip buttons…the C40 does it all. There’s a “new car smell” associated with this controller that preserves the scent of it coming right off the production line, and into your hands.

There are the dual analog sticks, direction pad, four face buttons, and four triggers that are standard on all modern game controllers, along with Options, Share, and PlayStation buttons, a 3.That might be annoying for PlayStation owners, and it’s definitely a bit odd there’s no Bluetooth support, but it comes with benefits on the PC—namely lower latency and higher reliability. It’s not a dealbreaker, but given just how customizable the rest of the controller is, this is a letdown.

Once the measurement has been taken, we are provided with a series of results that show the optical quality of the surface plus other information. I am not sure it overtakes the Elite as my current favorite controller, but it gives it one heck of a run for its money in every department. Most competitive controllers feature “back paddles” that allow the player to keep their fingers on the analog sticks and triggers at all times. On the PS4 the touchpad will default to its normal function, but on the PC it is essentially worthless. But that doesn’t stop it having a completely unique look and feel to competing controllers with the same layout, like the Razer Raiju Ultimate Edition. This controller is grippy thanks to its rubber covered handles, which is great for palm sweaters and anyone who feels like they squeeze a DualShock 4 out of their hands almost regularly. While I enjoy being able to customize my Elite on the Xbox itself, the C40 requires a PC (at least for now) for its tinkering. Simply tapping a button on the back and then tapping which trigger you want to assign, and finally tapping the face button you want it to mimic.

I’ve spent the last month or so playing around with the Astro C40, and while it’s not a perfect device, it’s clear Astro’s trademark attention to detail could benefit all sorts of premium peripherals. It’s hard to imagine anyone going through the cumbersome unscrew-and-swap process day after day, but…well, the option’s there.

Astro also includes force graphs for the triggers and sticks, and it’s here you can really dig into the C40 and make it your own. These issues are obviously minor and easily trumped by the overall design and functionality of the C40 TR controller. Mappability streamlines the controller for any genre and playstyle while improving response time and accuracy. DualShock 4 controllers + third party controllers, including the C40 TR, will not be compatible with PS5 titles.
